UK Barbershop Awareness Week – 13-20 September 2009 This Awareness Week is held in conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support and is a nationwide fundraising event with the aim of raising money for the charity, whilst also providing a unique opportunity to raise the profile of barbershop harmony and ultimately make our great hobby available to everyone who enjoys singing. The finale of the week was a prestigious concert at the London Palladium - ‘Best of British Barbershop’ and all our members who attended agreed it was a great success. The event is a joint initiative between The British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) and Sweet Adelines International, UK Region – Quartet of Nations. For our barbershop awareness we ran a 4-week taster experience:- On Thursday 3rd September 14 ladies came along to the first session of our 4-week Barbershop Taster Experience. The evening began with physical warm-ups, followed by vocal warm-ups of a very fun nature. Voice testing was next to establish the best harmony part for each of our guests, either Tenor, Lead, Bari or Bass, then everyone took part in singing their harmony part in some barbershop tags which they mastered very quickly. Didn’t they do well - a great sound. Next, under the direction of Debbie Hopkinson, Coastline sang a couple of songs to demonstrate how the four parts come together to create this unique harmony. Everyone was given music and a learning CD for a new song we are learning, the aim being to perform this song to friends and family on 1st October. Over the next 3 weeks course attendees will learn more vocal skills and join in the fun and friendship all our members enjoy.
